Continuation of Investigation Report

Case No. 130710
Investigating Trooper: McDaniel
Town of Crime: Hooksett

On Friday 6-5-98 at approximately 12:40 hrs I was dispatched to Rt 3 by Rt 93 overpass for an officer calling for assistance. While responding I learned that officer Keach held a suspect acting disorderly at his traffic detail and that officer Keach was presently attempting to effect an arrest. Upon arrival I found officer Keach just north of the Rt 93 overpass in center median of Rt 3. He had one male suspect in handcuffs who was being held down by officer Keach. This male suspect was thrashing about and yelling in what appeared to be Russian [naturally, it wasn't Russian; I just didn't have enough nerve to keep the English intonations. Actually, I was yelling in circles something like this: "My name is Leonid Positselski; I am a graduate student at Harvard, department of mathematics; my scientific advisor is David Kazhdan; my home adress is 257 Mt. Auburn, Cambridge, Massachusetts; my name is etc." -- L.P.] Another man in civilian cloths later found to be an off duty P.O. from another town was assisting officer Keach. I then helped officer Keach escort this suspect into the rear of my cruiser. During this time the suspect continued to resist us. He kicked back striking my right shin causing an abrasion and bruising. He was finally searched and forced into rear of my cruiser where he then calmed down. He was identified as Leonid Positselski dob 3/6/73 out of Cambridge, Ma. He stated he was a mathematics graduate student at Harvard University. He was a self-proclaimed paranoid individual who has sought psychiatric help in the past [I did: in the late Spring and Summer of 97 I voluntarily spent about 3 to 4 months in the psychiatric clinic on "8 marta" street in Moscow. Mostly I would spend weekdays there and go home for the weekend, where I was writing the paper about Bogomolov's conjecture and stuff, which became later my dissertation at Harvard. For the whole academic year 97-98 in Cambridge I was not able to write half as much mathematical text as during the weekends out of that psychiatric clinic in Moscow.] He was locked in our holding area and later processed by officer Verneville.

I had an opportunity to speak with Dr. Pelski [psychologist Veniamin Pinsky, a friend of Kazhdan -- L.P.], Mr. Positselski's psychiatrist from Cambridge Mass on the phone. This doctor advised he has had concerns for Leonid's safety [so did I, but for a different reason -- L.P.] because of his mental condition. He asked that Leonid be checked at a hospital for mental illness. Ofc. Verneville was advised to transport.
